Abstract :Jail, fine for bribing policeman |
Malaysia, KUALA LUMPUR: In order to release 11 foreign women who were arrested on suspicion of prostitution, a businessman tried to bribe a police officer with RM10,000 (S$4,155) for not taking action against the women. Yesterday, Wong Soo Keong, 43, was found guilty by the Sessions Court of bribing Assistant Superintendent Rohan Shah Ahmad of the Bukit Aman Crime Investigation Department, who led a raid at Wisma Indah, Jalan Tun Razak, at 1.15am on Dec 21, 2005.
Judge Rosbiahanin FLANGEArifin sentenced Wong to one year's jail and fined him RM50,000 or another year's jail.
Wong was ordered to serve the sentence beginning yesterday. Rosbiahanin also rejected Wong's application for a stay of execution pending appeal.
Earlier, counsel Liang Chong Beng mitigated that Wong is the sole breadwinner in his family.
In pressing for a heavy sentence, deputy public prosecutor Ng Siew Wee said the court should consider public interest and the seriousness of the offence.
